30 DAYS OF ONTARIO WINE – DAY 9 – KEW VINEYARDS
“It’s just a couple days old, but Kew Vineyards is shaping-up to be the most influential new Ontario winery to open in the last five years.”
“Fittingly, it opened in quiet fashion for those in the know. There was no a flashy marketing campaign, just good old fashioned word of mouth with a 21st century twist in the form of an invite via Twitter for friends (old and new) and family to come over and enjoy a glass of wine on the patio.”
“[A] vision is apparent the minute you walk off the patio, through the French doors, and into the boutique. The space immediately evokes a feeling of warm hospitality with modern– meets– historic country charm. It’s a naturally bright space with plenty of windows, white, supporting pastels like powder blue, and the occasional gold accent. Subtle touches throughout hint at the building’s history. Outside, the original bricks were restored and re-masoned (to make room for the French doors), while inside it’s the original wood floor you’re standing on and if you look-up, the original wood support beams are proudly displayed. There’s moulding, stained-glass and chandlers calling forth the gilded pleasure of the jazz age, but this time with a modern minimalist ascetic. Plants and a few sleek black tables for two with matching high-backed chairs fill the space―there’s even a sink that would look at home in your kitchen. But what you won’t spot is a tasting bar. That’s because there isn’t one. In fact, the only hint that you’re in a winery and not someone’s tastefully-decorated country home, is rows of wine bottles on the shelves sporting gorgeous labels that echo the aesthetics of the room.”
